"The mountain passes are no longer safe since the Azlyðine returned. The Fjölmine attack any that venture there. They're bolder than they've ever been."
- Waywatcher Karmine Wallseer
'The Cycle' is the term used for the life, death and rebirth of the Azlyðine. However it is also linked to the corruption that seems to be spreading across Azlyð. With each rebirth of the Azlyðine, magic that exists in the world is consumed - as this happens it is drawn from the world around it, taking it from the land and creatures that inhabit Azlyð. This cycle has left Azlyð with less and less magic, meaning the creatures that inhabit it are less magical as the cycle goes on, leading to the most mundane of sapients: humans.
The humans do not know of the cycle, or at least not the depth that it goes. They do not know that the lost species had been anything but what they are now and questions are only raised each time the Azlyðine returns.
The corruption that follows the cycle turned the elder races feral. It is caused by Azlyð being unable to support the magic that manifests inside the species, once this happens, and it takes multiple cycles before an entire species is corrupt, the species will fall to the corruption, reverting to little more than beasts. The corruption flairs with each rebirth of the Azlyðine. Each time the Azlyðine returns the level of corruption increases, and the feral population becomes more active and more aggressive.
